Rarely has an operatic event taken the musical world by storm such as Brett Dean’s Hamlet did on its premiere in the UK in June 2017.
In the wake of that international acclaim, Brett Dean is now established as one of the world’s most revered composers. As former Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Dean returns home to ANAM to direct the ANAM Orchestra in a thoughtfully curated program of Australian orchestral music in what he describes as a 'very special program of new music. It’s evocative, imaginative and sensuous, yet also highly dramatic and darkly haunting”.
The program includes From Melodious Lay, a 25-minute suite of music from Dean’s Hamlet opera featuring Finnish tenor Topi Lehtipuu and Australian soprano Lorina Gore, Richard Meale’s modern Australian classic Clouds Now and Then, Lisa Illean’s beautifully subtle Land’s End and Georges Lentz’s mesmerising Jerusalem (after Blake).
“These four orchestral scores are all particularly dear to me as both performer and composer' says Dean. 'The works of Richard Meale, Georges Lentz and Lisa Illean have featured in my programs before, most recently in an all-Australian studio concert I conducted with the BBC Symphony Orchestra... It was on that occasion that I experienced how well these composers’ works spoke or sang to one another, even though they display a great diversity of compositional voices and styles.”
