Hetty Kate is one of Australian jazz luminary James Morrison’s favourite singers. She has graced stages from New Zealand to New York and now divides her time between Paris and Melbourne. Known for her clear tone, swinging, straight ahead style and natural musicality, Hetty Kate is often lauded by musicians and audiences for what she ‘doesn’t do’ as a jazz singer. Her approach keeps true to the melody and lyric, but uses improvisation and invention in a way which never detracts from the story of the song.
During the last decade, Hetty has released six acclaimed albums, sung for the swing-dance community across Europe, Asia and Australia, and more recently has joined the ABC Jazz / Universal Music stable of vocalists. Career highlights include singing with the Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmanian and Perth Symphony Orchestras, performing at the Sydney Opera House and touring internationally as the featured vocalist with James Morrison’s award winning symphonic concert ‘The A to Z of Jazz’.
For her second show at Bird's Basement, Hetty will be joined by her outstanding quintet, first heard on her 2014 ABC Jazz release Dim All The Lights. Featuring James Sherlock (guitar), Sam Keevers (piano), Ben Robertson (double bass) and Danny Farrugia (drums) this is a sparkling and exciting combination.
Expect a warm and entertaining evening of new arrangements of classics and curios from The Great American Songbook, and favourites from Hetty’s releases.
