Handpicked for Fringe Westside at this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival, Night Terrors tells four classic tales of literary terror by or about women, brought together in an atmospheric and intimate one-woman performance.
“The audience was breathless” – The Age
“Utterly inspired…miss it at your peril!” – Arts Hub
In The Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, a woman commits murder but is driven mad by guilt. In The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a wife confined to her room becomes sure a crone lives behind the ugly wallpaper. In The Keepsake by contemporary Tasmanian writer Briony Kidd, a mother curses her family with a portrait of her daughters, one alive, one dead. In The Open Window by Saki, a girl tells her nervous visitor about the anniversary of a hunting party’s untimely deaths.
Night Terrors is a storytelling theatre format created by performer Stefan Taylor (Fat Tony & Co, Winners and Losers). After two critically-acclaimed seasons at Melbourne Fringe, Stefan and director Simon J Green (Adventures of Freddo, BULLET: A Superhero Comedy) are handing the reins over to rising star Caitlin Mathieson (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,Vic Theatre Company).
With Jaz Wickson’s (Ghost Stories, The Birds) technicolour nightmare design, open captions and Auslan interpretation every night, enjoy what issimo magazine called “an excellent hour of creepy tales,” September 14-30.
Sept 14-16, 20, 21, 23, 25-30. Thu-Sat 9pm. Tue, Wed, Sun 7pm.
