Simone Young Conducts Brahms

South Melbourne Town Hall

Sunday 19 August at 17:00 until 19:00
Melbourne South Melbourne Town Hall 210 Bank Street South Melbourne

'[Simone Young's] liquid but decisive gestures invite nuance and subtlety, while demanding energy and rhythmic precision… It is a joy to watch such a wonderful conductor so hard at work”. – The Australian

Richard Strauss’ sorrow-laden Metamorphosen, a threnody for the Germany of 1944 that lay in ruins about him, teeters precariously on the edge of this world and another: following its final bars, we are inevitably left staring into an immense silence. The life-affirming answer is the elegiac lyricism of Brahms’ Third Symphony.

Join Australian-born conductor Simone Young as she leads the ANAM Orchestra in a concert that explores these two works alongside Ernster Gesang by contemporary German composer Wolfgang Rihm.

Internationally recognised as one of the leading conductors of her generation, Simone Young's musical expertise is the perfect match for ANAM's energetic musicians at the start of their professional performance careers. 'ANAM is an extraordinary institution: intense, demanding, challenging and immensely rewarding to be involved with' says Young, 'making it possible for Australian instrumentalists to complete their performance training in this country'. The partnership between ANAM and Young have already provided Melbourne with some enduring musical memories: a Brahms series of searching intensity and last year’s Australian World Orchestra Turangalîla-Symphonie performance being just two highlights. This concert will be no exception!

“Our concert under Simone Young is an event I am truly excited for. I am delighted to be leading the cello section for Wolfgang Rihm’s Ernster Gesang. It is a piece that explores the timbral possibilities of the orchestra in an evocative way, combining Schoenberg’s conceptualisation of ‘tone colour melody’ with an easily digested harmonic language. The absence of violins in the orchestration allows the lower strings to speak openly and enjoy some time in the spotlight. Brahms’ Third Symphony is a cornerstone of the repertory, and performing it for the first time with Simone Young and ANAM is something I will no doubt cherish for the rest of my playing life.” – ANAM cellist David Moran (SA)
