From Dandenong Morning Tour & Puffing Billy Train

Day Trips Day Trips From Day Trips To

Be captivated by the towering Mountain Ash trees and breath in the fresh air as you head into Grant on Sherbrooke to indulge in their beautiful Devonshire tea and scones. Enjoy a steam train ride on Puffing Billy before returning to Melbourne.

  • Travel to the Dandenong Ranges visiting Grants Picnic Ground for Devonshire tea
  • See beautiful fern gullies, tall eucalyptus trees, and mountainous views
  • Ride the heritage colonial steam train Puffing Billy through the Dandenong's green wonderland

In a large comfortable coach, drive for just under an hour and you will soon notice the fresh air of the cool temperate Rainforest as you head towards your first stop Grants on Sherbrooke. Here, you are treated to delicious homemade scones with cream and jam while surrounded by a plethora of Australian native birds. Relax while listening to the sounds of the bush and the bird's song and have your camera ready for up close photo opportunities as you look out for Rosellas, Cockatoos, King Parrots, and be sure to listen out for the elusive Lyrebird. After the treat of morning tea, then depart for the short drive to the beginning of your Puffing Billy adventure. Start the journey at Belgrave where you will board the iconic steam train. At the locomotive depo, you will be given the chance to understand the workings of the historic and immaculately preserved train, with friendly conductors waiting to show you aboard and answer any questions. Once you are comfortable and ready to ride, it’s off and away through the lush green rainforest as you puff through the trees, taking in the fresh air and scenery. Be ready to wave at passers-by as locals and visitors alike love the site of the Puffing Billy Train chugging along the tracks as you weave through Sherbrooke forest, still keeping your eyes out for the wildlife in this pocket of natural bushland, you may be lucky enough to see a wallaby hopping through the bush. You will feel like you are a million miles away from the city. One of the most fun parts of the ride is as the train crosses the old Tressle Bridge, a great section to take a video to remember this fantastic adventure. Soon the train will be pulling into Menzies Creek, but not before you start to catch views of Port Phillip Bay up ahead. After alighting the train at Menzies Creek, say goodbye to this icon of Victorian History and pop into the township of Sassafras to check out the many independent shops, cafes, and galleries. If you are looking for a unique gift to take back home then Sassafras is your place, with a range of artistic specialty shops which sell hand-picked and hand-crafted quality items, from wooden toys to potted flowers and fragrant candles. Sassafras is also a tea lovers heaven with specialty shops stocking hundreds of flavors from across the world. Once you have delighted in these local crafts then take the short trip back into the city, arriving back into Melbourne around 1:00 PM, you can hop out in Federation Square ready to spend an afternoon in the worlds most liveable city.
