Alternative Walking Tours

Tours with a difference

Retracing the steps of Marcus Clarke, a young Barry Humphries, Germaine Greer and Vali Myers, you’ll encounter the studio of impressionist painter Tom Roberts, Mikra Mora’s chic café, the white-brick apartment of modernist artists Albert Tucker and Joy Hester, and scenes in Melbourne counter-cultural music history.

The character of the area has changed but scenes are still played out and stand as testament to an older, secret, a bohemian world.

Tours start at the State Library Victoria following in the footsteps of wayward author and Melbourne ‘s first bohemian, Marcus Clarke, walking the wild side of the city’s underground, travelling through bohemia past and present, from the dandies, goths, decadents and dilettantes of the nineteenth century to the hippies, hip hop artists and hipsters of recent decades.
