Travel on a century-old steam train and enjoy magnificent views.
Journey back in time on the best preserved steam train in Australia, Puffing Billy, and follow the original mountain track from the foothills of Belgrave to the mountain town of Gembrook in the scenic Dandenong Ranges, 40km east of Melbourne. This historic route is the last of five original experimental railway lines created to develop rural areas in the region during the 1900s.
The train's open-sided carriages allow passengers to hang their legs over the side - offering the most spectacular views from the carriage. From Belgrave to Gembrook, passengers can hop on and off at a selection of stations along the 24km route, including Menzies Creek Station, Emerald Town Station and Lakeside Station, which is located within the picnic grounds of Emerald Lake Park.
Puffing Billy's distinctive red carriages run across three historic timber bridges along the route to Gembrook, as well as up and downhill through scenic valleys and plains filled with trees and fern gullies, all under the shadow of the towering mountain range.
