Faces From the Past - Mystical Dragon

Mystical Dragon in partnership with Mystic Onion, is excited to present this exclusive new, never before seen in Australia event.

Join special guest James Gray, artist and curator of a substantial collection of 16th and 17th century pieces that are mainly Alchemy and Apothecary related for this “Faces of the Past” event. Consisting of eleven iconic stoneware face bottles and jugs commonly known as “witches jugs”. They have been chosen for their applied clay face masks and are most certainly items that are not seen everyday but may occasionally be found on display in top European museums! There will also be other faces from the past too. The items on display will date from around 1450 to 1680 and were all made and used in North Western Europe, namely The Netherlands, Germany and Britain. Our curator will speak about these pieces and some of the history connected to them. You will not only get the chance to see these ancient wares, but also have an opportunity to touch and feel one of them, to see what you can pick up from the energies for yourself!

As part of his journey here in Australia our wonderful curator has also been busy painting a whole series based on this collection and the folk that may have been present when these items were in use. One character is simply called “The Apothecary”, another “The Witch”. This series of paintings called “The Apothecary's Journey” have taken the best part of the last two and a half years to paint. They will also be on display at this event.

An approximate half hour movie will be screened that showcases and ties together the Apothecary character, the artwork, and old world items in a truly unique way!

James says: 'The fascination for me is not only the thought of who these faces may represent, but pondering what the maker was like as a person, what the user who bought one of these was like... Many questions in my head as to what these items have witnessed as they passed through time. Do you believe ancient objects have on their journey absorbed expelled energies from the folk that surrounded them? I definitely do, as I gaze upon them I feel something that I am not able to express so readily in words... except to say a sort of power or energy, perhaps a build up of many expelled energies, perhaps just the excitement of being around such old survivors... I am not sure. See if you feel anything while looking closely at the faces on display.'

With only 10 places offered per session this is your chance to get up close and personal with these evocative items from the past! Each day three sessions of approximately two hours are available. Bookings are essential for your chosen session through Mystical Dragon at only per person.

Session times are 10am to 12noon, 1.30pm to 3.30pm and 5pm to 7pm.
