Victoria, covering roughly 227,600 square kilometres of the south east coast of Australia, is the second-smallest state, but she is big on personality!
The song “Four Seasons in One Day” by Crowded House, released in 1992, was written about Melbourne while Neil Finn was living in the city. The lyrics in the song surmise the changing weather and emotions of the city to perfection.
“The sun shines on the black clouds
hanging over the domain
Even when you're feeling warm
The temperature could drop away
Like four seasons in one day”
Melbourne’s unpredictable weather can be a cause of contention amongst many but the locals are all used to it and prepared for it. We bring our jackets when we leave the house and you will always find an umbrella in our bags, just in case! The weather is at its most unpredictable during spring which is from September to November
An example of the “Crazy Melbourne Weather” is a chilly early morning which leads into a sunny mid-morning with blue skies that then morph into a cloudy, overcast afternoon and then to end the day, there will be a huge thunderstorm.
But this is what sets us apart from our neighbours in other states. You never have a dull day when travelling in Victoria!
Despite Victoria’s size, the climate varies right across the state. The northern part of Victoria is drier and experiences warmer weather than the south along the coastline.
This diverse weather in Victoria lends itself to a wide variety of regional areas from Alpine mountains that offer skiing and hiking, down to the sweeping coastline with coastal winds and then through to picture perfect beaches of the south that showcase the 12 Apostles and the rugged Wilsons Promontory filled with native wombats and kangaroos.
The Victorian climate is perfect for wine production and grape vine cultivation. Across 21 regions within the state, wine is produced in every conceivable style. No other state in Australia can boast a collection of wine this varied or colourful. Melbourne's melting pot of cultures and cuisines are the perfect stage to showcase Victoria's wines.
So don’t let the fear of our crazy weather scare you off. Just remember your jacket, a smile and let the magic of Victoria and her seasons take your breath away.
